When bad sectors start to happen, then they begin to spread like Cancer.Fixing the drive will make it last a little longer, enough to get the data off of it, but you are just delaying the inevitable.but i didn't do it because i did it for a smaller partition and it takes a long time AND i guess even if there was some bad sector on drive, it shouldn't let it format and re-write the partition table at all but i could do that. One just checks the files for error, the other scans the drive and marks the Bad Sectors and moves the file onto a good sector. So in my view (as a wild guess) CHKDSK won't do anything. This process takes several hours, sometimes overnight.
I get this error when i try to copy anything to this partition EVEN after remaking of partition tables too. If there are too many Bad Sectors then it will fail and the HDD needs to be replaced.
Being a 40 GB drive, this is an extremely old HDD and probably has failed.
Now type a Y for Yes to Unmount the drive or to restart. If it hangs or fails the HDD needs to be replaced Windows Error check is the same as CHKDSK. One just checks the files for error, the other scans the drive and marks the Bad Sectors and moves the file onto a good sector.
